Protest against Naenae Postbank closure

Protest against Naenae Postbank closure

Between 1993 and 2000 bank branch numbers in New Zealand fell from 1,551 to 849. Bank mergers were a common cause. Closures often conflicted with a community’s loyalty to a particular bank. In this case Hutt Valley locals protest plans by ANZ, which had taken over Postbank in 1989, to close the latter’s branch in Naenae in 1993. Postbank, the successor to the Post Office Savings Bank, had a strong customer base with small savers and depositors.
