Suburban expansion was aided by the introduction of cheap public transport. Developers of the new Wellington suburb of Kelburne (now Kelburn) introduced a cable-car service providing residents with a quick and easy way to commute to city workplaces. Here Premier Richard Seddon and others celebrate the launch of the service in 1902.
