Smartly attired shoppers bustle along Queen Street, Auckland, just before Christmas 1957. Formal dress when visiting towns and cities was a must until the second half of the 20th century, when dress slowly became more casual. Men and women both wore hats, which women teamed with gloves, scarves and smart handbags.
