Building Newmarket viaduct

Building Newmarket viaduct

In the mid-20th century transport planners decided a network of motorways was the best way to solve Auckland’s growing traffic problems. The southern motorway required the construction of a viaduct over the inner-city suburb of Newmarket, shown here being built in 1964. In 2009 this was being replaced by a larger and more seismically secure viaduct.
