Takapau’s Māori-immersion primary school serves the Central Hawke’s Bay district. New school buildings were constructed in 2003–4. The buildings are shaped like a kākā in flight and are based on this proverb: ‘The kākā bird that consumes the miro berry will inherit the forest; the man who consumes knowledge will inherit the world.’
