The Hastings suburb of Flaxmere is often associated with violence, criminal behaviour and social deprivation – and social, economic and crime statistics tend to bear this out. In 2008 a community-instigated hīkoi (march) against violence and gang activity provided residents with an opportunity to show that not all Flaxmere people subscribe to that lifestyle.
