School under construction

The Heaton Street school in Christchurch is being built in the mid-1950s. In the decade after the Second World War, as returned soldiers got married and began to raise families, there was a very large private investment in housing. This was paralleled by the large state investment in primary schools to cater for the baby-boom children.
