Ngāti Kahungunu ancestors

Ngāti Kahungunu was established as the main iwi (tribe) in Hawke’s Bay by the descendants of the eponymous ancestor Kahungunu. The largest figure depicted on this wall post (in Te Whare-o-te-Rangi at Te Aute College) is Taraia, the great-grandson of Kahungunu and Rongomaiwahine. Taraia brought his people south from Māhia to settle on the Heretaunga plain during the 16th century. The lower figure is Te Huki, whose descendants still live at Te Aute.
