Leisure cycling

Taking a long trip by bike became a popular leisure pursuit for the adventurous in the late 19th century. These members of the Pioneer Cycling Club on the West Coast road set off from Christchurch in 1885. The loose metal road must have made cycling difficult – the late 19th century version of an extreme sport.
