Johnsonville motorway

Motorways – roads within urban areas that were to be used only by motor vehicles – were first allowed for by legislation in 1947. This section of motorway, which is State Highway One near Johnsonville, Wellington, was the first part of a new kind of road that became increasingly common in New Zealand cities from the 1950s.
