Arthur’s Pass sign (2 o 2)

Arthur’s Pass sign

A young girl stands beside the road sign at the summit of Arthur’s Pass in 1936. The advice not to take risks and to change down gears applied more to the western side of the pass – the descent to the Ōtira Valley. Arthur’s Pass, built in 1866–67, was the first road across the main divide of the Southern Alps.
