Between 1955 and 1958, Hillary led the New Zealand contingent of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic expedition. An official farewell to the contingent was held at the Wellington Town Hall on 15 December 1956. Sir Edmund and Lady Hillary are pictured leaving the function.
