19th-century butcher’s shop

19th-century butcher’s shop

In the days before supermarkets New Zealand city dwellers bought their meat from butchers like David Taylor, family butcher in Wadestown, Wellington. In this 1902 photograph, meat hangs outside, and the horse and cart wait to deliver orders to customers. Most of the shops where people bought food made home deliveries. Householders could have a standing order, place an order by phone, or leave a list with the shopkeeper.
