Ding market garden

Ding market garden

Three generations of the Ding family take a break from hoeing their market garden at Outram, west of Dunedin, in 1964 (top); crates of produce are loaded onto a truck at the Dings’ garden, around 1961 (bottom). After the gold-mining era, a few Chinese miners did not return to China but began growing vegetables to supply Dunedin’s households. They founded a small but distinct community in the city and surrounding districts.
