Dredges on the Clutha River, 1908

In the 1890s and 1900s large dredges facilitated a revival of alluvial gold mining on Otago’s rivers, especially the Clutha. These dredges are 3 kilometres above Cromwell in 1908, by which time returns from dredging were falling.
