A new home, central North Island

Under the Tokelau Islands Resettlement Scheme, migrants’ fares were paid on a long-term loan basis, and they also received assistance with housing. Culture shock was prevalent – in the first few weeks many people saw televisions, telephones, movie theatres and supermarkets for the first time.
