Tractors are put on display by local firm Andrews & Beaven at the Christchurch show in the 1920s, attracting plenty of attention from interested customers. During these years New Zealand farmers began to use more machinery. The Labour government elected in 1935 encouraged the development of local light industry to supply farm machinery. Their Industrial Efficiency Act 1936 used tariffs as one instrument in this policy.
