The Wahine is widely known in New Zealand because of her disastrous wrecking in April 1968, in what came to be called the ‘Wahine storm’. She is shown here in 1966, decked with flags for her maiden voyage to Lyttelton. The largest ship in the Union Steam Ship Company’s fleet at the time, and one of the largest ferries in the world, the Wahine could carry 927 passengers.
