The Tuapeka Mouth ferry in Otago, set up in 1896, was New Zealand’s only surviving public punt in 2009. Officially designated a road, the punt ran between 8 and 10 a.m. and 4 and 6 p.m; travellers needing to cross the river outside those hours would call the operator at his home. The punt’s cabling can be seen to the right.
