Sonja Davies at an FoL meeting

As more women entered the paid workforce, women eventually rose to the top of unions. Sonja Davies became an organiser for the Shop Employees’ Union in the early 1970s, and in 1978 was the first woman elected to the executive of the Federation of Labour. At this 1978 FoL conference she sits surrounded by male unionists.
