After the First World War the government was determined to resist the influence of militant unions, which had reunited to form the Alliance of Labour. This 1924 letter to the Alliance from the general secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants explains that the union is withdrawing from the Alliance under pressure from the government.
