The opening of St Luke's shopping mall in Auckland in September 1971 was a glittering occasion. Among the dignitaries who attended were (from left) financier Sir Ron Trotter, Prime Minister Sir Keith Holyoake and Mt Albert mayor Frank Ryan. More than 100,000 people visited the centre's shops, which covered 1.2 hectares, on the opening day.
