Kōrero: City children and youth

Catholic children were a minority in cities, and were sometimes teased or bullied by their Protestant peers. The difference was more marked when they attended private Catholic schools, where their uniforms highlighted the difference. Growing secularisation and the integration of Catholic schools into the state system reduced sectarianism in cities. This is a classroom at St Patrick’s Catholic school in South Dunedin in 1959.
