Boys pack syrup tins at Auckland’s Chelsea sugar refinery in 1911. Many boys started work at the factory straight from school, at the age of 12. They were paid less than adult workers. When they turned 20 they were sacked, and a new boy taken on, unless there was a vacancy in the mill.
