Ōamaru’s lack of town development in the past was not cause for celebration at the time, but it has been turned into a virtue more recently. A depressed local economy meant that buildings were not renewed like those in more successful places. However, by the 1980s its collection of limestone buildings became valued as heritage buildings, and the town successfully markets itself as a heritage destination. These buildings are in Harbour St.
