Chemical engineer Dr Russell Burton manages new and emerging technology at Scion, a Crown research institute focused on forestry. Scion’s projects have included research into bio-plastics made from pine bark tannins, and adapting pine so it could be used as a hardwood. In this 2007 photograph, Dr Burton is shown accepting an award recognising his contribution to chemical engineering from the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand.
