Electric engine at Wellington station

Electric engine at Wellington station

In the early 21st century electric engines of the EO type were used to pull trains to Upper Hutt and Plimmerton, with one engine at each end of the train. EO 51, pictured at Wellington railway station, was made by Toshiba in the 1960s. It was first used on the Ōtira section of the Christchurch–Greymouth line, with its 8.5-kilometre tunnel.
