Street marches have traditionally been the preserve of the political left, but not always. In 1986 thousands of farmers came to Wellington to protest against high interest rates and the removal of farm subsidies, which had caused hardship and forced some farmers off the land. The protest began with a rally in Mercer Street before marching to Parliament.
