Women lead a protest march up Auckland’s Queen Street during the divisive 1951 waterfront dispute. Placards advertise an upcoming meeting at the Domain where the workers’ side of the stoppage was to be aired. Shortly after this picture was taken police launched an unprovoked attack on the marchers, leading to 14 being taken to hospital with serious injuries. The incident became known as ‘Bloody Friday’.
