In 2007 Wellington and Auckland city councils widened the footpaths of their major shopping streets – Lambton Quay in Wellington, and Queen Street in Auckland – to encourage pedestrian shoppers. This shows Queen Street in 2008. Street furniture such as seats were provided for people to rest, talk or watch the street life.
