Beach racing

Percy Coleman sits astride a Royal Enfield motorcycle at a beach racing meet held at Waikanae Beach by the Ixion Motorcycle Club, around 1930. Dubbed ‘Cannonball Coleman’, he was the major figure in early motorcycle racing in New Zealand. Coleman won his first race on a grass track, aged 14. By 1914, when he was 17, he held Australasian records for fastest times for the 10 miles, 15 miles and 1 mile on a motorbike.
