
By the 1910s motor cars had become a common sight on streets. Pedestrians and motorists shared the road and vehicle speeds were kept low to reduce accidents. As this 1919 image of Victoria Avenue shows, the speed limit on this Whanganui bridge was 8 miles (13 kilometres) per hour.
