Community gardens, which are communal plots of land gardened by a group of people, appeared in New Zealand from the 1970s as private gardens shrank in size or disappeared. In 2001 volunteers planted Kensington Gardens on land designated for Wellington’s inner-city bypass road, to protest against the proposed development. The gardens were uprooted to make way for the road in 2005.
