Blackball mine

Blackball mine

Smoke and steam pour from the engine house and workshops of the busy Blackball coal mine on the West Coast, around 1902. In 1908, the mine was shut down for several weeks by a historic strike led by Pat Hickey. The success of this strike heralded a period of industrial direct action by miners and other militant unionists. Today the Blackball mine no longer operates and all the buildings in this photo are gone.
