This image was on the cover of The New Zealanders, an illustrative book published in 1975. By that stage very few New Zealanders were actually farmers, yet Colin Meads, All Black rugby hero and farmer, was still seen as the personification of the quintessential New Zealander. Mead’s rural background was generally seen as the reason for his rugby prowess.
