The Veterinary Council of New Zealand was established in 1994. It replaced the Veterinary Services Council and also the Veterinary Surgeons Board, which since 1954 had been responsible for the registration of vets and any disciplinary procedures. The Veterinary Council assumed these responsibilities, and also advised the government and universities on matters to do with veterinary practice and education.
