Dry forest remnant

Dry forest remnant

Until 2004 this small native bush remnant in Mt Royal, near Palmerston in Otago, was grazed by stock, infested with weeds and considered to be of little value. However, an assessment by botanists revealed that it was an example of a broadleaf–māhoe–kānuka forest that was now rare in the district, and was worthy of protection. The owners protected the remnant with a Queen Elizabeth II National Trust covenant, fenced it from stock and undertook weed and pest control.
