Lincoln University researches the effects of dairy-farm management on leaching of nitrate into the subsoil and potentially into groundwater. This is studied using lycimeters – large pipes full of soil buried vertically so pasture can grow on the surface and water can infiltrate. Underneath is an underground room where the infiltrated water can be collected from each pipe. Professors Keith Cameron and Hong Di examine pasture on the soil surface (above), and collect drainage water from one of the many lycimeters in the experiment.
