A lysimeter is a large tube buried upright in the soil. Water that moves through the lysimeter can be collected, measured and analysed for nutrient content. Probes inside can measure the soil moisture content at different depths. Lysimeters can also be used to measure the effects of irrigation on pasture growth, and the amount of nutrients that would be lost into groundwater. This row of lysimeters at Lincoln University allows the effects of differing fertilisers to be compared.
