The Halfbred, or ‘colonial’ Halfbred, sheep was one of the first crossbreeds specially developed for New Zealand conditions. Initially the Merino was the only breed imported, mainly from Australia. However with improved pastures, and especially with moist conditions underfoot, Merinos were susceptible to footrot. They were also not well suited to meat production. The Halfbred was a result of crossing a Merino with a Romney or English Leicester, to produce a ram which was mated to a Halfbred flock.
