From the 1990s many country towns began to appeal to urban consumers. Geraldine is on the main tourist bus route from Christchurch to Aoraki/Mt Cook. Many buses stop there, allowing their passengers time for a coffee and a quick shop. Food outlets and fashionable shops have sprung up to cater for this new market.
