Rural letterbox, Ruapehu district, around 1940

The adoption of cars and trucks in rural areas during the 1920s and 1930s allowed farmers and their families to travel to town more easily. It also made possible the rural delivery of mail, so farmers did not have to go to town to pick up the mail, but could simply stop at the box to get letters and the local newspaper.
