Galatos is a town on the island of Crete in Greece. It may seem an unusual choice of name for a back road between Rotorua and Taupō. Galatos was the site of a famous counter-attack by New Zealand soldiers together with locals in Crete during the Second World War. The soldiers have been long remembered by Cretans, and in turn access roads to the land taken up in the Rotorua and Taupō districts by returned soldiers were named after the war in memory of Crete.
