Kōrero: Horses

Prior to the development of winches and steam engines, both oxen and horses had valuable roles in the early timber industry. This team of six horses in Phalin’s bush near Stratford, Taranaki, in 1904, is harnessed in single file so they can pull trolleys carrying logs along the tramway tracks. The gang of eight men were probably needed to load the logs.
