One source of English migrants to New Zealand in the 1870s was Kent, where the ‘revolt of the field’ movement of rural labourers’ unions had also been strong. This photo shows the White Horse Inn at Chilham in Kent, where a large group of English were farewelled before sailing to New Zealand in 1879.
