Spring frosts are common in Central Otago, and are a major threat to flowering fruit trees. One way to reduce damage is to spray trees with water, which helps insulate the flowers. However, in extremely cold weather sometimes the water freezes, as it has done on these apricot blossoms in a Central Otago orchard.
