Further research has established that Edward METCALF SMITH was born in Fenny Compton, Warwickshire on the agreed date but to Charles METCALF (not SMITH) and Maria nee JOINER. He was orphaned by 1854 and taken in by an aunt. It is probable that she was one of his mother's sisters married to a SMITH. He was involved in the iron and steel industry from this date, certainly in Staffordshire and probably at the Bradley Hall iron works. He then worked for the Birmingham gun makers Hollis, and through this connection went on to the newly established Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock. His official signature in New Zealand was E. METCALF SMITH.
