Walk-through milking shed

Walk-through milking shed

The introduction of machine milking was associated with the development of the walk-through shed. A chain was hooked behind the cow to prevent it backing out of the milking bail (stall), and one leg was tied to stop it kicking off the milking cups. The men are ‘stripping’ the last milk by hand after the cups have been removed. After this, the cows walk through a door at the front of the bail and the next animals move into place.
