Bridget Goodwin, or ‘Biddy of the Buller’ as she was known, was a rather unconventional woman. She spent decades working as a gold miner, living with two male digger friends. Like male gold miners she wore moleskin trousers and boots, and smoked a pipe. She died in 1899.
