These men are threshing cocksfoot grass seed on Banks Peninsula using hinged flails, about 1900. At this time, the seed was in heavy demand for sowing pasture in the North Island. Mechanised threshing was not possible on the steep hills of Banks Peninsula, so it was a labour-intensive manual job.
